Our Vancouver dentists provide diagnosis and dental treatment for jaw pain or tightness to help relieve TMD symptoms and address the underlying causes.
What is TMD?
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) is a disorder of the jaw joints that can cause a host of painful symptoms. This is because your compromised jaw muscles have to work extra hard to do their job.
TMD Causes & Treatment
The temporomandibular joint (or TMJ) is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull. It lets you move your jaw up and down and side to side so you can talk and eat.
TMD occurs when there are issues with the joint, including misalignment of the teeth or jaw, airway issues or trauma.
Once your dentist diagnoses you with TMD, they can provide you with a treatment plan to help relieve your symptoms and address the causes.
Signs & Symptoms
TMD can cause a variety of painful symptoms which can worsen during stressful times including:
- Headaches and migraines
- Teeth grinding or clenching
- Jaw, face and/or neck pain
- Dizziness
- Ringing in the ears
