It is back to school and that means kids are back to playing sports. We have been getting a lot of questions from parents about mouth guards and their role in protecting children's teeth and gums - here is Dr.Yeganegi's take on Sports guards:

Why use a Sports Mouth Guard?

The purpose of the sports mouth guard is to act as a shock absorber in the mouth to protect the teeth from excessive forces. The sports guard also protects your head and brain from concussion if the blow is onto the lower jaw. Sports guards are an important piece of athletic equipment for anyone participating in a sport that involves falls, body contact or flying equipment. This includes football, basketball, baseball, soccer, hockey, skateboarding, gymnastics, mountain biking - any activity that might result in an injury to the mouth.

A well designed sports guard also protects the jaw joints (TMJ) from injury by supporting and cushioning the jaw joints in times of blunt forces to the lower jaw. In harsh blows this can even reduce the risk of jaw fracture.

Well made sports guards adapt smoothly to the upper teeth and gums, staying firmly in place, even when speaking, breathing heavily or playing sports very actively. There are several specific design options, but for the vast majority of people the customized smooth upper mouth guard is the correct choice.

What Are the Different Types of Sports Guards?

No matter which type of mouth guard you choose, it should be resilient, tear-resistant and comfortable. The three types of mouth guards are:

  • Custom-made mouth guards - These are individually designed and made in your dentist's office or a professional dental laboratory. Not surprisingly, they are likely to provide the most comfortable fit and best protection. Your dentist makes an impression of your teeth and then constructs the mouth guard over a model of them. Because they fit and feel better, most athletes prefer customized mouth guards.
  • Boil and bite mouth guards - These come in a pre-formed shape that can be altered by boiling the mouth guard in water, then biting into the warm plastic for a customized fit. They can be bought at many sporting goods stores, and may offer a better fit than stock mouth protectors. Follow the directions carefully to avoid winding up with a poor-fitting mouth guard.
  • Stock mouth guards - These are inexpensive and come pre-formed, ready to wear. Unfortunately, they often don't fit very well. They can be bulky and may make breathing and talking difficult.
